Tonight at Ace Hotel New York, we host the opening reception for Illcentric Crewtons, a gallery show by Ricky Powell, legendary photographer of the New York street.
Ricky Powell is a born-and-bred New York City street photographer widely known for his photos of musicians, pop icons and artists ranging from the Beastie Boys, Eric B. & Rakim and Run D.M.C. to Andy Warhol, Sandra Bernhard and Jean-Michel Basquiat, to New Yorkers whose legend resides primarily in their own neighborhoods. His 90’s television show, Rappin’ With the Rickster, is like a Sasquatch in the annals of public access, featuring impromptu exchanges with guests like Eazy E, Ad-Rock and Ione Skye, Sonic Youth and Laurence Fishburne, and establishing the funky uncle vibe he’s still known for, the one in heavy rotation on his recent mixtape with DJ Smoke L.E.S., Uncle Sloppy’s Zooted Lay-up Line.
Ricky’s intimate photographs stand out as unvarnished and organic, live and direct visual documents of New York life. As another CMJ comes around, we host an exhibit of some of the iconic photographs he’s taken during his decades of capturing New York and its music makers on film.
The reception starts at 7pm. Free beers from 7 to 9pm or as long as they last. Ricky Powell hits the decks for a special DJ set at 9pm. What? Ricky Powell does a DJ set at nine. Illcentric Crewtons lives in our gallery space through October 19.
