Lulu at Ace Hotel

In the fall of 2009, Ace Hotel New York teamed up with Massify and Killer Films to launch a project supporting emerging filmmakers. We courted short vignettes that used Ace NYC as their background (or foreground). The winning films would be “original, concise narratives that are intelligent, artful, and comedic.” Maya Kazan shot just such a film, and placed as one of the selected filmmakers to shoot a longer project at the hotel. Massify sat down with Maya to ask her about her film, herself, and working with the Ace NYC team. Here are some pictures from her shoot for “Lulu at the Ace Hotel.”

If you’re on the make for Brooklyn-made pickles, a faux-fox stole, double-sided lollipops from Papabubble, snowglobes with tiny plastic bags floating through them, a Kiosk installation, minimalist sex toys, or Various Projects trenches from heaven — look no further. No. 8a at Ace New York has all the cool things you don’t know you need but that make your life better and your imagination brighter. One of the best places to go when you have the day to yourself.

Ace Goes to SXSW

We joined our friends at Levi’s and Converse for SXSW and created a very special VIP area for performers. A room from Ace Palm Springs sprung up in the Levi’s Fader Fort where the bands hung out while Will Bryant customized their Converse kicks.

The festival was packed with new and old friends, including Andrew and Andrew — who were there interviewing bands and DJing — and Jason Thome from Converse. The lineup this year was as brilliant as it was diverse — Curren$y, Hauschka, The Morning Benders, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and  Those Darlins give you an idea of the musical feast we were treated to, and the friends hanging out in the Ace Palm Springs Texas outpost.

"It’s a shame to only have dreams at night. You should have a few opportunities during the day."

The Scout Mag made a brief and beautiful documentary about Roman and Williams, the celebrated design partnership that brought you Ace Hotel New York. You can see the full article at Scout Mag online.

Obey held a preview of their new line last week at Ace Hotel New York, including a limited tee with artwork by Shepard Fairey. The shirt benefits the Surfrider Foundation, founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers to protect the world’s oceans, beaches, and killer waves.

Shepard also painted a room at the original Ace in Seattle. Hi, Shepard. This T-shirt looks awesome.

We’re honored to be working with internationally acclaimed English artist Antony Gormley and Mad Sq Art to help bring Gormley’s new sculpture exhibition, Event Horizon, to New York. Event Horizon comprises 31 of Gormley’s life-size sculptures of himself all over the place: at Madison Square Park – turned into an art gallery without walls by their art program Mad Sq Art – and on the Empire State Building, at Ace Hotel, and other locations around the Flatiron District. This is Gormley’s US public art debut and it is going to be one of this summer’s big deal cultural events for NYC. Learn more by visiting Event Horizon New York.

Gormley says the Event Horizon installation will create ‘a relational field in which the passerby as well as the aware view is implied in a matrix of looking and being look at.’ Feel free to implicate yourself by submitting to our photo and video contest to celebrate the exhibition. Take pictures of the sculptures in their natural habitat and send them to us. We’ll post your entries weekly and announce winners in black & white, color, and video. Readers vote on entries, so if your entry wins we’ll give you something cool.

We also have a special package during the installation, since Ace is only a couple blocks from Madison Square Park and basically in the middle of the exhibit. Stay here and get a free upgrade (based on availability), the official Time Out/Event Horizon city guide, a
disposable camera that we’ll get developed for you  and an official Event Horizon t-shirt. See more about the package, or book directly online.

Check back here weekly to vote for new entries and see our winners.

We collaborated with Generic Surplus and Arkitip last year to create Ace-exclusive shoes perfect for the poolside and for walks in the desert. This spring, we’re re-introducing these very coveted kicks in new colorways, and with all the same great elements as the original. The classic low-top laced plimsoll silhouette has been re-imagined with a mesh upper made of quick-drying canvas that keeps your feet cool and dry. The vulcanized non-slip sole is perfect for poolside cocktail mingling on a Sunday afternoon.

Check them out early (they’re due out April 15) and reserve a pair with Arkitip. Keep them at the ready for your first foray into the sun this year at Ace Palm Springs.

People like the terrariums in the lobby at Ace Hotel Portland. Martie Kilmer makes them. She has a store right around the corner from Ace, filled with skulls, cacti, and supplies for the curious. Visit her website to see more of her work, including a cow skull with air plants growing out of it. Pret-ty great.

Terrariums are really fun to make — you should try it. Get a cup of coffee and take notes in the lobby sometime.

Remember your bed at Ace Hotel Portland? It was really soft and looked good. You can get an exclusive Pendleton x Ace Hotel Portland pure virgin wool and cotton blanket, and then your bed will be like that, too.

Woven in Pendleton, Oregon and finished in Washougal, Washington by Pendleton Woolen Mills, a 140 year old company based in the Pacific Northwest, just like Ace. Email Ace Hotel Portland. They’ll send you an order form and then put one in the mail for you.

Pendleton also makes blankets for Ace Hotel New York. Send them a note if you’d like one.
