We’re holding a contest for two tickets to Hitched, an unconventional bridal and wedding showcase being held at Ace Hotel Palm Springs on January 30. Hitched is put on by a creative group of friends with an enthusiasm for the handmade and light-hearted, and their event is going to be really fun. Read more about it on our calendar, and in the meantime, send your worst wedding photo ever to hitched@acehotel.com by January 23. If your photo is sufficiently cringe-worthy, we’ll announce your name and post the photo on our blog January 24, and you can pick your tickets up at the door. We have a special rate for the night, too, so you can make a romantic getaway out of it, sort of like a prenuptial honeymoon.

Ladies, gentlemen and everyone else, we proudly announce the winner of our short film contest for two free passes to the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Filmmakers were required to use bellbottoms and umbrellas in honor of the festival’s opening night film, PoticheChristina Winkelmann and Morgan Swift sent us this ode to an unorthodox Christmas, The House with No Chimney. Thank you very much.

We have some special packages for the film festival that also involve free screening vouchers and passes. And we’re having tons of rad events during the festival, including screenings, movie trivia, live music and official festival parties.

A reminder that there are two days left to turn in your short film to win a pair of full access screening passes to the Palm Springs International Film Festival, January 7 - 17. Submit a short film between 1 and 3 minutes long, using both umbrellas and bellbottoms on the cast or as props, in honor of the festival’s opening night film, Potiche. Send a YouTube or Vimeo link of your film to filmfest@acehotel.com by 6pm PST on January 5. We’ll announce our winner the following day — but you’ll also get two vouchers (while they last, people!) just for entering, which you can use at any screening.
We’ve also got some special packages for the festival that include vouchers and a couple of rare full access screening passes. There aren’t very many available, so get em while we got em. You can find all Ace events for the festival on our calendar.
And you have a couple of days to finish your masterpiece, so get crackin!

Palm Springs is gilded around the edges with illustrious cinematic history. It’s a romantic and strange place in love with the power of film. So, in celebration of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, we’re holding a contest for two full access screening passes to the festival.

We’re having a family artists’ retreat weekend in October with tons of interactive workshops — including underwater photography, felting, succulent gardens, airbrushing, dioramas, and macramé — and activities like  sunrise yoga, skateboarding 101, and music and storytelling under the stars. It’s called Crafting Community, and our friend Karen Kimmel is returning with a band of talented artists to bring you this awesome weekend. Splendid will also have a pop-up shop where you can customize your own clothing and get family portraits. Fireside s’mores, a taco dinner, and Kimmel Kids goodie bag are all part of the fun. We have a special package and rate for the event, and Karen and Daily Candy are hosting a contest to give away a package for the event.

We like writers. So does our friend, Lily. Her site, Typetrigger, just launched — every 6 hours, a new writing trigger is released, and you write in response. Everyone can see each other’s entries, and readers and writers vote on the ones they like most. It’s a really good place to get inspired. Sometimes you’ll win something, too. For instance, we’re going to run a contest there in a few weeks, and we’ll give the winner a huge spa credit and upgrade at Ace Hotel & Swim Club. But the site is awesome enough on its own measure — send an email for a special invitation for our blog readers and get started. Write. Now.

Yukiko Corella wins the Take Cover grand prize Levi’s Pioneer Sessions x Crosley turntable for guessing last week’s song — I Saw Her Standing There covered by The Rebels, an Iranian boy band from the 60’s. Impressive, Yokiko. Apparently, we have some serious music nerds in our midst. Thanks to everyone who participated, and if you guessed this one, too, give yourself a pat on the back. Stay tuned for more fun from Howie, and come see him DJ in the desert this and every Friday, all from old 45s.
