The Big Apple Barbeque

Saturday is the The Big Apple Barbecue. Our friends at the Madison Square Park Conservancy have helped put it all together.

We have a tie this week. Our Gormley winners are Roy Shuttleworth and Saunak Shah. A Polaroid and a puddle. We’re sending them each some fancy soap with pearl dust in it. The new entries for Week 9 are up, and it seems that people have begun to feel a little more comfortable with the man himself. Go be mildly scandalized and vote by clicking on the Gormley button in the sidebar. And send your entries for a chance to win cool things.

Gormley & LaMousse

We’re sending Jana DeHart two drink tickets for the Ace NYC lobby bar so she can celebrate her Gormley fame this week. She’s our winner for Week 3 of the contest. Our new entries are up, too. They include a Gormley clone walking a poodle. Alma says of her photo: “That is my mini-poodle LaMousse, and being French, she loves men — all men!!!” (exclamation marks hers).

So check out LaMousse and our other fantastic entries - click on the Gormley button in the sidebar. And send yours to eventhorizon@acehotel.com for a chance to win some cool things. We’ll send them to you, or you can come pick them up at the hotel. If Alma wins, we hope she’ll bring the fearless LaMousse with her.

]Antony Gormley’s Event Horizon is inspiring people to look sharply at the world we can trudge through without truly noticing. Gormley hopes the installation will create ‘a relational field in which the passerby as well as the aware view is implied in a matrix of looking and being look at.’ It’s an invitation to implicate ourselves in a landscape that’s suddenly more alive.
The first of Gormley Event Horizon contest hit the ground running with a bunch of fantastic entries, including a “video painting.” But Lauryn Bushman’s picture of a Gormley on the Empire State Building stole the show - she’s our winner for Week 1, and we’re sending Lauryn an Ace Hotel NYC t-shirt to demonstrate our admiration.
The entries we got for Week 2 also really impressed us, as well . They include a photo of a drawing made by a 6 year old, and fake-out Gormleys made by some guys that were disappointed when their work building wasn’t chosen as a Gormley site and took matters into their own hands. Check out all the new entries and look carefully — there are hidden details and sentinels it can take a moment to see. Like magic eye. Vote for your favorites — winners get Stumptown coffee, drink tickets, t-shirts, and other stuff. Plus, they get an additional 10% off their room rate if they book our special package for the event.
Send your entries to eventhorizon@acehotel.com.

"Think about this, the built environment, in a way as a picture of a world, and we being part of that picture."

A lot can happen in a week. Since we announced our collaboration with Event Horizon last Friday, the exhibition has been fully unveiled. Quite literally. 31 casts of the artist’s body stand vulnerably exposed on rooftops, corners, and perches throughout the Flatiron District. You’re not alone if you’ve almost been hit by a bike messenger while pausing to look up at a shadowy sentinel on the skyline.

And we’ve received our first entries for the photo & video contest - learn more about the contest and our special package for the event here. Check back weekly to vote on new entries and see winners on our Gormley page. Send us your entries to win some hot swag.

Also, stay tuned for our analog contest with an exciting collaborator and very special prizes.

PHOTO & VIDEO CONTEST: ACE NYC PARTNERS WITH ANTONY GORMLEY: EVENT HORIZON: MARCH 26 - AUGUST 15, 2010

We’re honored to be working with internationally acclaimed English artist Antony Gormley and Mad Sq Art to help bring Gormley’s new sculpture exhibition, Event Horizon, to New York. Event Horizon comprises 31 of Gormley’s life-size sculptures of himself all over the place: at Madison Square Park – turned into an art gallery without walls by their art program Mad Sq Art – and on the Empire State Building, at Ace Hotel, and other locations around the Flatiron District. This is Gormley’s US public art debut and it is going to be one of this summer’s big deal cultural events for NYC. Learn more by visiting Event Horizon New York.

PHOTO & VIDEO CONTEST

Gormley says the Event Horizon installation will create ‘a relational field in which the passerby as well as the aware view is implied in a matrix of looking and being look at.’ Feel free to implicate yourself by submitting to our photo and video contest to celebrate the exhibition. Take pictures of the sculptures in their natural habitat and send them to us. We’ll post your entries weekly and announce winners in black & white, color, and video. Readers vote on entries, so if your entry wins we’ll give you something cool.

SPECIAL PACKAGE

We also have a special package during the installation, since Ace is only a couple blocks from Madison Square Park and basically in the middle of the exhibit. Stay here and get a free upgrade (based on availability), the official Time Out/Event Horizon city guide, a
disposable camera that we’ll get developed for you  and an official Event Horizon t-shirt. See more about the package, or book directly online.

Check back here weekly to vote for new entries and see our winners.
