Our friends are making a film about Kathleen Hanna — founder of Riot Grrl and frontwoman for the earth-shattering punk band Bikini Kill. See more here soon including our exclusive interview with Kathleen. For now, drop some pennies in the well, if you can, to help propel this film into the world.

We’re inspired by the gracefully integrated activism of Apolis' line of work, including their Market Bag, made in partnership with a small artisan co-op in Bangladesh. Rudy’s Barbershop has collaborated with Apolis to garner even more visibility for the product and the partnership, and to support the co-op (the Rudy’s Saves bag is pictured here in action with CEO Vy Le at the Pike Place Market in Ace’s hometown of Seattle, WA). Demand for the bag has grown so much that the infrastructure of the co-op needs to expand considerably. In response, Apolis has created the Bangladesh Sewing Academy — a project to buy 20 new sewing machines for 20 women in the co-op. They’re taking donations now, and as a stakeholder, you’ll be a part of the collective investment of $8,500 in the building of a new facility, the purchase of 20 new sewing machines & the wages of two trainers who will provide 20 women with employment training every 6 months. They’ve raised over $3,000 — show your love and get 20% off at the Apolis online shop.

We like to start Memorial Day weekend early and keep it going late. This year, we’re hosting the 2nd annual Desert Days with DJs all weekend, a pop-up shop with Mt. Fuji, Feel Good Spa specials, good food late into the wee hours, and a silent auction to raise money for AIDS research with LifeCycle, featuring art from Shepard Fairey, Spike Jonze, and other friends. See more on our calendar.

We got together with our friends at Beams in Japan to create this limited edition T-shirt designed by Japanese artist and surfing enthusiast Yusuke Hanai. 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Real Medicine Foundation. The shirts are now up on our online shop, and are also available for purchase at Ace Hotels and at select Rudy’s Barbershop locations.
You can also donate to Real Medicine directly and we’ll match your donation dollar for dollar, through Saturday. We’re close to our goal of $18,000 and every little bit helps. Donate directly here. If you’re in the market for another awesome T-shirt, you can check out our recent collaboration with Kenzo Minami — 100% of profits from his RE: shirt will also go to the Real Medicine Foundation. Act fast so we can get a big chunk of change to this amazing organization.

NYC-based artist Kenzo Minami is an old friend, and has painted in the rooms of Ace Hotel Portland and NYC. He’s created a custom shirt for our online shop to raise money for relief efforts in Japan - 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Real Medicine Foundation. Here’s what the shirt’s about, in Kenzo’s words:

It is about ‘Re:’ in terms of ‘Reply’ - our reply to the tsunami and our response to Japan (which is this charity itself and collectively to help the world and give on a larger scale). Also, Japan will need a lot of ‘Re____’ from now on: ‘Rebuild,’ ‘Restart,’ ‘Reboot,’ ’Recharge’ and more.

The limited edition shirt is now up on our online shop, and is also available for purchase at all Ace Hotels and at select Rudy’s Barbershop locations.

New Amsterdam Market is inspired by the history and cultural institution of public marketplaces where commerce engages with a sense of place and culture. It’s going to be a collective market space for food purveyors who source food directly from farmers and producers whom they trust to be good stewards of our land and waters, and will work to diminish the economic, social, and educational impediments to sound nutrition by being accessible to all. They’re raising funds to get the market up and running, and we’re looking forward to their Oyster Saloon Fundraiser this Saturday at the Old Fulton Fish Market on South Street. The menu is an exultation of fresh, real foods by celebrated chefs, including April Bloomfield, executive chef at the Michelin-starred Breslin and John Dory at Ace Hotel New York. Find out more about the event and buy tickets here.

We’re celebrating Mardi Gras a second time with Flambeaux, a benefit to raise funds for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band Foundation's music education program for young musicians in New Orleans, April 1 - 3.
The weekend includes Gulf-inspired dinners and brunch, live music, Sailor Jerry hurricanes, a masquerade ball and a bunch of Feel Good Spa specials to boot — all on Dinah Shore weekend. Beyondadoubt and DJ Brice Nice spin New Orleans soul, second line brass and bounce remixes at their Saturday afternoon pool party — Beyondadoubt played a round of Memphis and New Orleans 45s at our Opening Ceremony launch party, and Brice brings his unprecedented collection of soul and bounce straight from the source. Lots of rad stuff going on, plus plenty of time to sit around by the pool with cucumbers over your eyes.

We wanted to share this with you — one of the hands-down spookiest photos of all time taken at the recent Dill Pickle Club Perfect Pickle fundraiser at Ace Hotel Portland. Some unseen (to us) force is luring these two women away from a table full of perfect pickle samples and into its evil clutches.
Anyways, the Dill Pickle Club is really great, and we prefer that it not be an unseen force, but rather something you’re paying a lot of attention to. You can join up on their website.
