Pestisani, Romania

Constantin Brancusi’s clean geometry, unveiling the essence of things in marble, wood and stone. The modernist sculptor born on this day in 1876 preferred simple clothes, a studio with a rock slab table and a primitive fireplace, and furniture, utensils and a phonograph he made himself.

You might have caught a preview of Coast Modern at Ace Hotel & Swim Club earlier this year if you were with us during Palm Springs Modernism Week. Directors Mike Bernard and Gavin Froome kept the Pacific on their left from LA to Vancouver on a pilgrim’s tour of the most inspired dwellings built by the pioneers of the Modernist aesthetic — homes that live in harmony with the natural world they inhabit. The full documentary is available now on iTunes and through a bunch of other channels. It’s a beautiful piece of work, as at home with its subjects as the subjects are with their surroundings.

We like vintageism, futureism, nowism and postmodernism, but we are tried and true fans of Modernism. So we revel with Palm Springs Modernism Week and a few friends including Moby, A+D Los Angeles and Denny Tedesco at Ace Hotel & Swim Club this week, showing our love for Mod with screenings, benefits, Q&As and a pop-up shop in the Cleaners. We even have ring-a-ding-ding room rates and Feel Good Spa specials and everything.
