Opening Ceremony, the high-fashion version of a cultural-exchange program, unveils its new outpost at Ace Hotel New York on Valentine’s Day. They’ll be joined by Project No.8’s anti-souvenir shop, No. 8a. The people behind these shops are curators, rather than owners. They’ll be bringing their pitch-perfect favorites to the Ace, suiting the stores to everything you’ll need or don’t know you’ll need during your travels. In addition to highlighting their unique and democratic roll call of established and emerging designers, OC at Ace promises Tumi Luggage, Haribo gummie snacks (if you eat through the ones in the snack bar in your room), Maison Martin Margiela white ostrich and goose feather pens, and custom OC dental packs. No. 8a has I <3 NYC snowglobes filled with tiny trashbags, minamalist white sex toys, and double-ended lollipops covered.

Arkitip asked Ace’s Alex Calderwood and John Jay of Studio J to curate their latest issue, X: Mark of Collaboration. It’s made up entirely of creative alliances between artists and innovators. After you look at this selection of pages and pictures of John and Alex working on the issue, you might want to get one. You can do that here.
We worked with Commune Design to make Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs. They made The Commune, designed guest rooms and communal spaces, and worked with other collaborators to make Ace Palm Springs the magical place that it is. Commune just opened a Community Shop at our hotel, with things that are handmade by real people, including cups and bowls by Heath Ceramics, who made Do Not Disturb signs for the doors. You can see pictures from the store at PSFK, and read about it in the LA Times.
Visit Community Store during Palm Springs Modernism Week 2010. We’re hosting many of the week’s events including lectures, architecture tours, films, martini parties, and a show of vintage Airstream trailers. We have two room packages for the week, The Frey and The Modern. See more about it here.
Ace Hotel & Swim Club is built in a mid-century Howard Johnson motel. We’re excited about the local enthusiasm for Desert Modernism, so we kept the original things people loved about the hotel intact and mixed in some newer things that inspire us.
