Flying Lotus rhythmically narrates a mediation on the ever-dissipating, ever-amalgamated self; the watercolors running through our veins; the tiny torture of having a bad case of the wants; the control of objects and obstacles; the unattainability of wholeness.

Not only does he do this, and very well, but he also plays at Desert Gold this year at Ace Hotel & Swim Club during Coachella — spinning at our party with Warp Records and with DJ Day at a special DG edition of ¡Reunión!. We still have a handful of rooms open, starting at one hundred and twenty nine tiny tortures. Book online and learn more about Desert Gold.

Tonight, we kick off twelve days of AfterFest — the official Palm Springs International Film Festival afterparty at Ace Hotel & Swim Club. We love film more than life itself and most of our fanciful self-perceptions and wildest dreams are built of the flickering moments of cinematic glory that have forever burned themselves into our minds. So we’re excited to offer this, our second year of kindred celebration with film buffs along with a killer line-up of DJs, bands and some short films, plus all the late night food and spirits you could require. Tonight, we’re getting it all started with DJ Day’s ¡Reunión! in the Amigo Room.

The legendary Daedelus, pictured here in a mermaid sandwich, DJs tonight for ¡Reunión! at Ace Hotel Palm Springs — he sent us a few words to celebrate.
Now for a little reminiscence… Reunion! Of course the first thing that comes to mind is old (school) friends, and the curious fate of those who haven’t already been looked-up / stalked thru your favorite social network. For me it more closely means growing up in Santa Monica, just a few miles away from Palm Springs, a little less Desert, a bit more Pacific.
Time spent as a young musician soul searching for a sound and trying to gig. However Los Angeles wasn’t always this hotbed of musically adventuring creativity (please see current examples of Nosaj Thing, Tokimonsta, Flying Lotus, Shlohmo, Baths, plus many many more all from LA). It was the kind of place if you didn’t get invited on stage, you paid-to-play. A curious phrase that unless you’ve gigged the Whiskey-A-Go-Go you’d hopefully not know, it means you get alotted a certain number of tickets and if you don’t sell them you pay the venue back for the remainder… tough times as a youngster! But a movtivating force to get those very same friends, close or far distant, to make it out on whatever week night into a shameful reunion of a sort.
However time changes all things and I’m going to be proudly inviting all to this DJ set, taking time to enjoy some friendly faces, and perhaps acquire some new acquaintances. Oh and it’s free entrance so don’t worry…
See you tonight Alfred!

We’re throwing a Coachella weekend pre-party at Ace Palm Springs on Thursday, April 14 with DJ Day, Gaslamp Killer, Phoreyz, Aimlo and DJ Magneto — and we still have rooms available Thursday night, and when you book we’ll include an all-access wristband to all of our Desert Gold events for the weekend, including bands, DJs, free Rudy’s Barbershop haircuts, impromptu artist interviews and performances, and midnight shows in King’s Highway. Book online and we’ll put your passes in your room.
DJ Day just dropped this new mix for springtime — you can download it for free. He says: “It’s spring again, the world is falling apart and we could all use some feel good music, which is why I put this together for you, for free. I hope you enjoy it.” And we do.
Catch Day and friends tonight in the Amigo Room at Ace Palm Springs, too, if you’re in the neighborhood —- they’ll be spinning a mix of funk, folk, 45s, house, hip-hop, dubstep and disco til late, with friendly prices on good tacos and tequila til 11pm.

INTERVIEW : SHRED ONE

DJ Shred One, aka Sheila Red, co-founded the all-female DJ crew RRS FEED with her pals DJs Roza and Raichous (Shred One is in the middle, above). Based in Chicago, she’s gone from LA to Brooklyn and back spinning and touring with artists like Talib Kweli and Exile. She’s playing tonight at Ace Hotel Palm Springs with DJ Day at his weekly party, ¡Reunión!, and she talked with us about the endangered art of DJing, her collective, and the beauty of analog modes.

Tell me about your creative process and how you go about approaching edits and mixes.

I still dig and collect records, so finding new and old music is my main inspiration for making mixes and edits. When I discover a song that’s new to my ears and hits me in the gut, I like to fiddle with it. I’ve been using Ableton, and the more I learn the program the more I get inspired to create the music I hear in my head. For mixes, I like to record live as it keeps an honest element in the sound. In a world of digital perfection, there’s beauty in analog imperfections.
