PART III : LINDA GERARD & DJ DAY

Dear faithful readers — if you know us and love us at all then you know who Linda Gerard is. And you know that we love her beyond reason. And you know that she is currently facing off with the asshole named cancer — and we’re hoping everyone can chip in to help her out. Coin, vibes and kind words all matter.

Above, you’ll see Linda’s brief chat with Andrew Andrew during Desert Gold 2010 — the fifth edition is fast approaching this month. And below is part three of Linda’s interview with DJ Day — you can grab Linda’s Sissy Bingo t-shirt and her latest record, a compilation of greatest hits, Fabulous Selections, on our shop — all proceeds go to Linda’s Kick Cancer’s Ass Fund.

Read on for more from this right-on woman — you can also catch up on parts one and two while you’re at it. Light a candle, sing a show tune and dress everyday as though for paradise, in her honor.

Next up in our interview series: Ira Glass!

Can we talk about Funny Girl?

Well what happened with Funny Girl — I was with William Morris, and the pianist for Funny Girl was a guy named Peter Daniels. Peter Daniels was my accompanist. He was also Barbra Streisand’s accompanist and Lainie Kazan’s. He worked for all three of us and when Funny Girl opened, I went to opening night with my husband at the time, and I remember nudging him and saying, “It’s going to be me up there someday.” I knew that role was written for me.

If you haven’t met Linda Fabulous yet, you haven’t really lived. She fills Ace Hotel & Swim club with her energy, her enormous sunglasses, and her flamboyant style. And she has a way with Judy Garland tunes.

Every Monday night, Linda hosts Rose Tattoo Bingo, a hit with locals and visitors, in the Amigo Room.

We have really fabulous weekly events in Palm Springs. The Amigo Room at Ace Hotel & Swim Club was picked by Details Magazine as one of the top ten hotel bars in the world. It’s become a clubhouse and watering hole for desert locals, and a second home for LA weekenders. Freshly muddled drinks and good food nourish the soul. Unusual DJ nights draw their own followings and build community. Find out if you belong with Linda or Howie, or both. There’s always something going on.
All week long, you can hang out at the pool, get a massage in a yurt , or enjoy a Desert Facial from the Amigo Room. It’s made with muddled cucumber and mint in fresh pineapple juice with sparkling water. You don’t have to pay a cover or book a room to enjoy these rare luxuries, but you might want to check out The Easy Rider.
Here’s a list of weekly events:
+ Mondays: Rose Tattoo Bingo with Linda Fabulous, the Singing Waitress. Linda has a way with Judy Garland Tunes. Amigo Room, 7 to 10pm.
+ Last Wednesdays: Craft Night with Ranger Joe. 1/2 off drink specials, free craft supplies, and a new craft featured each month. Amigo Room, 6 to 9pm.
+ Thursdays: ¡Reunión! with DJ Day. Inclusive and intimate. A mix of funk, folk, house, hip hop, dub/step, and disco. Feel at home and be yourself. Amigo Room, 9pm. Plus TNT Taco & Tequila specials from 5 to 11pm.
+ Fridays: Intoxica Radio Live with Howie Pyro. Playing dirty old rock n’ roll records in the Amigo Room. 9pm.
+ Sundays: Children of the Sun. DJ Victor Rodriguez has punk rock attitude with a disco soul. You can dance to Victor’s legendary, unique mix or lounge poolside with outdoor cocktails. 3 to 7pm. Plus Sundays at the Short Bus: $4 margaritas and $2 domestic drafts by the pool, 4 to 7pm.
Also on some Thursdays, Ace presents Night Moves, a semi-monthly film night. During the Palm Springs International Film Festival, we had a Jeff Bridges tribute.
Stay tuned for future Night Moves and other special events, and join the A-List for monthly updates.
