If you’re in Berlin during May and are in the market for a limited edition, minimalist tattoo, stop by to see our friends at Arratia Beer, a gallery in Berlin with Elizabeth Beer of Project No. 8 and Euridice Arratia. Their latest exhibition hosts Olaf Nicolai, who has created a codified alphabet and suggests that visitors select the initials of someone they love or hate — the designs embody “not just information, but also communication. You have to ask the person if you want to understand it,” Nicolai says. Tattoos will be inked off-site through May 28.

Art in room 402 at Ace Hotel New York by our resident thief of hearts, Johnne Eschleman. In his own words:

A version of the Thieves Family “Husband and Wife” tattoo. the acronym on the left signifies “Prisoner of the Zone”. The acronym on the right (spelling of the Russian word for “bread”) signifies “I Shall Preserve My Only Love.” I changed the image from the original book version, but here’s the book title in case we should include with photo on the blog: Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedaedia Volume Two. Okay, that’s it.

Thanks, Johnne. See you soon.

Hello Valentine,
Yes, you heard correctly. My friends and I visited the Ace from the 11th-13th of July and had a fabulous time.  Like I mentioned in the previous email the entire staff was friendly and went over and above our expectations and their jobs to make us feel welcome and to make sure we enjoyed our time there.  We are in the process of planning another trip out there because we had such a wonderful time.  I manage 3 tattoo shops in the North County San Diego area and on the drive home we thought, what a better way to commerate our trip than to get it tattooed permanently on our bodies.  So we all came down to my shop and got tattooed.  So far, myself and 2 others got the tattoo and 5 other friends who went with us made appointments for later this week.  We were not sure what exactly to get, so we tattooed the coyote, figuring it had to do with the Ace and it was just as fierce as our trip there was. If you have any other questions hit me back and I will foward this email to my friends so they can give you their feedback as well. Enclosed are the tattoos that have already been done.  Thank you for the email and we hope to see Ace very soon.

Jesse
