This is Kyle and this is the Type Truck, the fully functional letterpress studio she built into an old delivery truck. Come see Kyle all weekend during Palm Springs Pride and Hands On : Shade at Ace Hotel & Swim Club, and make art for free in the parking lot with us.

Our third annual queer arts and music festival at Ace Hotel & Swim Club werks into Palm Springs for LGBTQ Pride November 2-4. This year, Hands On: Shade celebrates underground gay ballroom culture in NYC and all the legendary children and butch queens who’ve made the way for everyone — gay, straight and all — to be themselves and work it hard.
The Miracles Club, MikeQ, Beyondadoubt and Mustache Mondays spin house, vogue, bounce and ballroom all weekend, and Kiki Xtravaganza of The House of Xtravaganza puts on a mini ball by the pool and one in the Amigo Room late night, after a poolside screening of Paris is Burning. We’ll also host the Type Truck so you can slink over with a cocktail in your swimsuit and make some letterpress art, betch. We’ll whip up some easy phrases or you can invent your own for a new generation of realness.
Rooms are on the cheap and we’ll have a bunch of Feel Good Spa specials, free clay face masks by the pool and freshly muddled cocktails. Git.

Our first afternoon of printmaking for Summer School at Ace Palm Springs — cards, posters and a pair of corduroy shorts are drying on the line bedecked with wet inky patterns and biting wit, scratchy Irma Thomas is wafting over the pool, and we’re happy.
The Type Truck is parked by the pool and Kyle Durrie’s giving the power of the press to just anyone walking by.

A piece from Kyle Durrie, of Power & Light Press in Portland, one of our visiting print artists for Summer School at Ace Palm Springs. She’s passing through town in the Type Truck.
Right now, I’m living in fantasyland, out on the road in a 1982 Chevy step van I converted into a letterpress print shop with a sign press from the mid-20th century and an 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen press. I’m a few weeks into an eight month Type Truck tour (currently poaching internet in a parking lot in San Rafael) and loving it.

I’ve always been really interested in working with my hands. It’s such an amazing gift that we humans have - these two hands that can grasp and hold and touch and form. There are so many ways for us to access cheap and disposable facsimiles of actual experiences these days. I think people forget what we’re actually capable of, that we have these amazing things called hands that can, you know, MAKE stuff. Hand work is about empowerment, creativity and self-sufficiency.

I’ve traveled a fair amount with my partner’s band, and I really love the way that he travels — arriving in a new town, exploring, meeting people and sharing his music. It’s such a no-brainer for musicians — you just load your gear in a van and hit the road. I started thinking that it wouldn’t be so hard for me to do something similar with my printing. And so, Moveable Type was born…

Summer School workshops are free to guests and Swim Club members all weekend, July 23 & 24, and rooms are ten percent off. We’ve also got music all weekend by School Night Los Angeles, and a pop-up gallery and shop on Sunday night with guest art and featured workshop teachers.
