Back in August we hosted Get in the Saddle with Levi’s and Urban Outfitters at Ace Hotel New York — the mobile bike shop is part of a celebration for the release of the 511 Commuter. This cross-country journey is now culminating in Portland at the Oregon Manifest, an organization and celebration that believes bikes make the world a better place for everyone. We feel the same way.

Oregon Manifest is celebrating their challenge this weekend September 23 & 24 with a competition to design and build the ultimate utility bike. They are a pretty amazing organization — “We exist to celebrate and amplify bike craft, design and innovation. We believe that real innovation happens in workshops, garages, design houses and schools. We value the process of making, the spirit of ingenuity and the passion of brave undertakings.”

Keep an eye out for our friend Jordan Hufnagel's creation. He'll also be making a few custom bikes for Ace Portland with the help from our friends at Levi's. Stay posted for that unveiling soon.

You can find the Levi’s x UO Bike shop around Portland throughout the weekend — on Friday at PNCA from 4-8pm and at the Chris King manufactory Saturday from 2:30-6pm.

Levi’s and Urban Outfitters present shorts from the Bicycle Film Festival, as curated by festival founder and director, Brendt Barbur, this Sunday at Ace Hotel New York. After being hit by a bus while riding his bike in NYC, Brendt felt compelled to start the festival as a platform to celebrate bicycles through music, art and film. He’ll be at the screening and staying after for a Q&A.

The screening is part of a whole weekend celebrating the saddle and wheel at Ace New York, and a larger cross-country tour with Levi’s beginning at Ace NYC and ending at Ace Portland, including a mobile, pop-up bike shop where you can tune up your bike with the best of them — the shop appears at Ace NYC this weekend on Friday and Sunday.

While you’re here, check out our gallery show with New York-based artist Michael Kim, Bicycles, up today through August 9, presented by Levi’s. For several years, Michael has collected photographs of bicycles from daily newspapers around the world being put to use for work and play by everybody under the sun. The images remind us that bicycles are inextricably part of our daily lives — pulled out of context, they’re highlighted as almost extra appendages in the machinations of our lives, and as a symbol of commonality among all people.

As part of the project, we’re happy to announce that Ace NYC and Ace PDX will be receiving four custom, hand-built bikes by Thomas Callahan of Brooklyn’s Horse Cycles and Jordan Hufnagel of Portland’s Hufnagel Cycles, respectively. These fine steeds are being crafted exclusively for Ace and will be available for guests to use. Stay tuned for more.

We’re launching new films on our Video on Demand system in New York and Palm Springs. Our friends who make films have shared some with us, and with you — including Winnebago Man, documentaries about the desert, short films and a new series by Levi’s, We Are All Workers. From the comfort of your Ace guest bed, you can watch these moving, complicated and inspiring films about the American work ethic, experience and expression, as well a VBS.TV series of Americana.
To lighten things up a bit, we’ve made available to you Winnebago Man. You probably already know about Jack Rebney, but if you don’t, do yourself a kindess and watch this.
We also partnered with Massify and Killer Films to invite emerging filmmakers to develop screenplays that use Ace Hotel New York as a backdrop. We were astounded  and thrilled with what came back and the winners are featured on Ace Picks.
There are a few documentaries about the desert we think are beautiful, hilarious and interesting, so we put those on our VOD, too. Plagues & Pleasures of the Salton Sea, narrated by John Waters, is about the paradise nobody wants. The Ghost Mountain Experiment follows rugged idealist Marshal South and his hippie family as they face themselves and the world while living off the land.
If you bring your kids, you can get them to sleep before you watch the grownup stuff, with Bunny Ears TV, a hand-picked collection of cartoons from around the world, including some bedtime reels.
You can see all the films on Ace Picks.

Levi’s and VBS.TV recently went on a trip with a group of Navajo cowboys from the Triple B Association  — a bronco and bull riding league catering to the Indian community of the American Southwest. They tailed several of the Association’s toughest and most up-and-coming riders all across New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado to take a peek into their incredible lives — training and competing in rodeos and the lifestyle that goes with it.

We’re showcasing some selected images from the trip, by photographer Brad Bunyea, in our gallery at Ace Hotel New York from November 15 to December 12. Anyone can come see it, and all guests checked in between now and December 12 will get a special Pendleton x Levi’s Ace NYC keycard holder.

You can also see the video on VBS.TV and get a look at a special product line that inspired the trip, from Pendleton for Levi’s.

Jay Carroll did an installation in the lobby at Ace Hotel New York for the Levis x Filson collaboration and the Oregon Fire Lines film on VBS.tv. It’s pretty haunting and beautiful. And the wallets are going like hotcakes — get yours soon. Go check it out at 29th & Broadway — it comes down tomorrow — and see more on Jay’s blog.

Yukiko Corella wins the Take Cover grand prize Levi’s Pioneer Sessions x Crosley turntable for guessing last week’s song — I Saw Her Standing There covered by The Rebels, an Iranian boy band from the 60’s. Impressive, Yokiko. Apparently, we have some serious music nerds in our midst. Thanks to everyone who participated, and if you guessed this one, too, give yourself a pat on the back. Stay tuned for more fun from Howie, and come see him DJ in the desert this and every Friday, all from old 45s.
