An excerpt from Lance Bangs and Spike Jonze’s Tell Them Anything You Want, their documentary about “Where the Wild Things Are” creator Maurice Sendak — shown here with his pining bride-to-be, Catherine Keener. Spike and Lance will give a Q&A about the film after it screens at our new free weekly screening series at Ace Hotel New York, Liberty Hall Screenings.

The first screening is this Sunday — we’ll kick off with an evening of Moscow Mules and short films shot at Ace NYC with Massify and Killer Films, followed by Cold Weather by Rooftop Films, a NY-based nonprofit that supports independent film through production, education and really awesome outdoor screenings (though they’re making an exception for Liberty Hall).

We’re launching new films on our Video on Demand system in New York and Palm Springs. Our friends who make films have shared some with us, and with you — including Winnebago Man, documentaries about the desert, short films and a new series by Levi’s, We Are All Workers. From the comfort of your Ace guest bed, you can watch these moving, complicated and inspiring films about the American work ethic, experience and expression, as well a VBS.TV series of Americana. To lighten things up a bit, we’ve made available to you Winnebago Man. You probably already know about Jack Rebney, but if you don’t, do yourself a kindess and watch this. We also partnered with Massify and Killer Films to invite emerging filmmakers to develop screenplays that use Ace Hotel New York as a backdrop. We were astounded  and thrilled with what came back and the winners are featured on Ace Picks. There are a few documentaries about the desert we think are beautiful, hilarious and interesting, so we put those on our VOD, too. Plagues & Pleasures of the Salton Sea, narrated by John Waters, is about the paradise nobody wants. The Ghost Mountain Experiment follows rugged idealist Marshal South and his hippie family as they face themselves and the world while living off the land. If you bring your kids, you can get them to sleep before you watch the grownup stuff, with Bunny Ears TV, a hand-picked collection of cartoons from around the world, including some bedtime reels. Lulu at Ace Hotel

In the fall of 2009, Ace Hotel New York teamed up with Massify and Killer Films to launch a project supporting emerging filmmakers. We courted short vignettes that used Ace NYC as their background (or foreground). The winning films would be “original, concise narratives that are intelligent, artful, and comedic.” Maya Kazan shot just such a film, and placed as one of the selected filmmakers to shoot a longer project at the hotel. Massify sat down with Maya to ask her about her film, herself, and working with the Ace NYC team. Here are some pictures from her shoot for “Lulu at the Ace Hotel.”
