Summer School tenured professor Justin Krietemeyer — cofounder of National Forest and of worldwide good vibes — celebrates his new show “Oh Snap” at This Gallery in LA tomorrow night, March 1 til about 10pm. Bring a friend and hang out with us at La Cuavita down the block afterward. Find above an unstill and censored preview of the work you’ll witness.

Zines from last year’s Summer School — a summer camp for adults at Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs with art workshops and good music — happens a couple times a year. Keep an eye out for more.

Pages of Florencio Zavala's sketchbook — Flo's teaching an illustration workshop this weekend at Summer School starting today, our semi-biannual art-making-while-imbibing situation at Ace Palm Springs. School Night Los Angeles is bringing down a bunch of great people to give workshops by the pool. All of this is going down during AfterFest, our concomitant nightly fête running throughout the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Making things is really fun, and so is watching things — it all begins this evening. Let us join together in holy lounging.

The one and only Chris Johanson held a percussion workshop at Summer School 2012 at Ace Hotel & Swim Club. This is the track he recorded with a bunch of Ace guests by the pool, a painting he made about it, and a picture of Chris and folks. And here’s what Chris had to say about it:
This is an art making situation where everyone is going to make some new art. We are going to talk about life though stories, percussion and paint. When we are done everyone will leave with a CD of music that they will never forget making. I have an idea what we are going to do but as we know in this trip called life, you never know how it is going to go. There could be some detours, a bump in the road, an unexpected beautiful who knows what, etc. I can tell you this, it will be fun and at the very least awkward. So come on into the art class and have a good time.

Summer School has returned — this weekend we have the amazing Chris Johanson teaching a percussion workshop, Johanna Jackson leading an abstract expressionism cake decorating session, Abby Portner (set designer for Animal Collective) making puppets, and Brian Roettinger leading the class in hand-lettering and zine-making. You can do all this drunk, sober or high on life in the Clubhouse next to the pool — and you’ll leave with your very own art. The cake — you will probably want to eat that before you go. Unless you get truly abstract and it becomes inedible.
As always, Matt and Chris of School Night LA are bringing rad bands and DJs to the pool and the Amigo Room all weekend including The Miracals, Chasing Kings, American Royalty, Good Night Keaton and Justin Cornwall.
Rooms are on the cheap, and all workshops are free for guests and Swim Club members and day pass holders. Last year was a truly incredible experience, and we’re so excited to be back in the poolside-art-making-saddle once again.

You probably remember Summer School — the three-day party was part of a partnership with our friends at Dr. Martens — their First and Forever storytelling project was a perfect match for a weekend full of firsts. Beginners, old hats, enthusiasts and dilettantes all got together to make something beautiful.

The Video Mouse got some footage of all the amazing people who joined us for a weekend of art, design, printmaking music and spiked chocolate milk we bought with our milk money. Here’s to the next one — for now, enjoy the next best thing.

We had an amazing time at Summer School — here are some shots from the rest of the weekend.

Our first afternoon of printmaking for Summer School at Ace Palm Springs — cards, posters and a pair of corduroy shorts are drying on the line bedecked with wet inky patterns and biting wit, scratchy Irma Thomas is wafting over the pool, and we’re happy.
The Type Truck is parked by the pool and Kyle Durrie’s giving the power of the press to just anyone walking by.

This brilliant undead gentleman, Matt Goldman, will be joining us Saturday for $1/Minute — a speed-design fundraiser during Summer School, this weekend’s printmaking festival at Ace Hotel Palm Springs.
We’ve got a big weekend ahead — tomorrow night, Blackstrap Molasses plays our live music residency, Revolver, and Matt co-hosts School Night Los Angeles as printmaking workshops and gallery shows in the Clubhouse roll out Saturday and Sunday.
We knocked some bucks off rooms and spa treatments — take yourself on an art retreat. See you there.
